Avoid picking dragon fruit that has visible brown spots on it. The skin should be bright pink with no blemishes.

A ripe dragon fruit should feel heavy for its size. Hold one dragon fruit in each hand (to compare the weight) and pick the one that feels heavier.

Similar to an avocado, it should give in when you gently press your fingers into it, without feeling mushy. If it's too firm, let it ripen on your counter for a couple of days until it has softened.
